Not sure why I have been getting comments on a two year old post about how buying used tires is a waste of money 99% of the time. Love being told I’m an idiot for buying new tires, even though this is often more economical anyway when all costs and time are taken into consideration...

Ugh. I keep trying to tell my brother this. He buys a new tire about once/month. He doesn’t even inspect the tread on the used tires he buys, he goes for “lowest price he can find”, which is usually $25 or $30 for a C hinese tire with 10% life left. None of his tires ever match. He treats his car like absolute garbage. His brakes are barely working. He had an avoidable but not his fault accident the other day, so now his bumper is shot on his leased Corolla that 30% into the least, is already over the mileage by 20k miles.

He’s a walking talking bad-decision machine when it comes to his car . Don’t be like my brother, buy new tires. They stop better, they grip better, and over the life of the tire, they’re actually cheaper.

I’m no stranger to buying used tires, but I’m very picky. I only buy matching sets of four, same make/model/size, and only if they’re less than 5 years old with half tread left or better. If I can’t find what I’m looking for in matching sets, I buy new.

I’ve bought used tires before, but not lately. There’s a couple shops around here that sell take-offs. Got a used set of Kumho’s awhile back but turned out that one had a leak, so that was not a good thing. More recently, I picked up a used tire for the minivan when one was damaged and unrepairable. The other tires had about 50% tread left and I didn’t feel like springing for a new tire. I went to the guy who sells the tires and got a matching model and size for $20, and it served me well until I got 4 new ones.

Then I found that Sam’s Club has specials a couple times a year. If you time it right, you can get $80 rebate and free mounting and lifetime protection and balancing. I think they do this every Memorial Day. So I ordered a set online and timed it so I paid and installed  them up at the Club during the special promotion period.  Saved about $200.
